Good Strong Coffee With CaféPod

One of the best pieces of kitchen kit I ever invested in is my beloved Nespresso machine. It’s simple and fuss-free, which is just how I like my mornings to be. The low vibration of the machine kicking into action is like a gentle shake on the shoulder and a whispered “Hey, coffee’s ready”. Waking up to the aroma of a coffee brewing makes for a sublime start to the day. With this said, you can appreciate how eager I was to test out some Coffee capsules when the opportunity arose.

CafePod Flavours

CaféPod are a relatively young company founded in 2011, their stated goal being to provide customers with good strong coffee capsules as an alternative to the more immediately recognisable Nespresso. The capsules are compatible with all home-use Nespresso machines and work in exactly the same way. In other words, simply pop one of the capsules into your machine and within 60 seconds you’ll have a great tasting coffee.

Ordering online via their website couldn’t be simpler. You can choose to buy individual flavours, or opt for packs, such as the taster pack which contains 1 box each of their 8 coffees (80 capsules in total). You can also choose a monthly subscription service, which you can cancel at any time if you should ever wish to. Nespresso capsules cost between 29p-35p, whilst CaféPod’s capsule’s cost between 27p-29p, making them slightly cheaper. Delivery costs £4.95 for 2-3 days standard delivery, but is free if you either spend over £40, or if you take advantage of the subscription service.

On first impressions, I feel the packaging could be improved to allow the box to fit through a letterbox, like many food subscription service boxes are currently designed to do. This would mean slimming down the actual packaging in which the capsules are kept, of course. I also would like to see them follow the lead of Nespresso and make the capsules recyclable (you send back your empty capsules for recycling via courier or drop off into a Collect+ store ). It would be awesome if they added their own accessories in the future as well. I’m talking such things as coffee cups, or a handy container to keep the capsules in (rather than the boxes they come in). It would certainly expand their appeal, as far as I am concerned.

The Taste Verdict

I was sent 4 of their flavours from the single origins range to try out: Colombia; Sumatra; and 2 expressos, Ristretto and Supercharger.

Colombia

This particular blend was my personal favourite. I loved the smoothness it had without sacrificing any of the strength. The crema was thick and I found no call to add any milk. Highly recommend this Fairtrade coffee.

Sumatra

Organic and Fairtrade, this is like a darker incarnation of the Colombia. I immediately noticed a mild kick of spice to it but it was not overly bitter. Nice on its own but I preferred this one with a splash of milk.

Ristretto

This is a lovely full-bodied coffee, smooth going down but satisfyingly strong. Add milk depending on your taste, but it might be too weak for those seeking a big strong hit.

Supercharger

The name is pretty self-explanatory, but for those still unsure, it’s essentially an injection of coffee so strong it could raise the dead. A death-defying wonder potion in a steaming, aromatic cup. This would be my go-to in the mornings! Simply put, a beautiful expresso.
